Liya Brook's Jamaican National Team is set for World Cup Group Stage

Jul 22, 2023

Washington State freshman soccer player, Liya Brooks, has been called up to play for Jamaica at the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, July 20 – August 19.

Brooks comes to Washington State after an impressive junior career, representing Jamaica at the U-17 and U-20 levels, before her recent senior call up. Brooks was born in New Jersey, then relocated to Hawaii when she was ten years old, before finally residing in Eugene, Oregon where she graduated high school.

Brooks started having conversations with Jamaican National Teams end of 2021, securing a spot in her first camp January 2022, playing with the youth team until a couple months ago. Brooks earned her first senior team call up in August 2022.

Despite the magnitude of representing a national team at the highest level, Brooks says nothing equates to the feeling of coming to WSU.

"I will tell you that I was more nervous to come to college than I was to go play with the senior team, and I still am nervous. Hopefully I can bring back experience," Brooks said.

Brooks says the transition to Pullman has been made easier by her incoming freshmen group and other girls on the team. The 2023 South Eugene HS graduate is excited to provide the national team with good vibes and will be ready if she is called on.

Jamaica will play in Group F – against Brazil, Panama, and France. First group stage game for the 'reggae girlz' is against France, Sunday 23 July 2023, in Sydney Australia. Kickoff will be at 03:00 PST.
